Great Britain - Silverstone

Written by Super User. Posted in Non categorizzato

The Silverstone circuit was not born as a motorsport circuit.

In fact, back in 1943, Silverstone was born as an airbase for the RAF – Great Britain’s Royal Air Force.
Following the end of hostilities, the circuit was based on its three runways, arranged in a triangle – a shape common for tracks in the UK that were converted airbases. The layout was interspersed with sharp bends, protected only by straw bales.
Today the layout offers three circuits and the track is still used as an airport on race weekends – making it one of the busiest in the UK on big events such as Formula 1. This means that many believe that the track can become ‘slippery’ thanks to aviation fuel – kerosene – being left on the Tarmac.
Add in the open, wind-swept flat landscape and traditional English rain and the asphalt itself can be very slippery.
